James Breeden, 66, Dies After Collision Thursday; First Fatality

H-R Aug 29, 1957

Poweshiek county suffered its first traffic fatality of the year Thursday when James Breeden, 66, was killed in a highway crash on N. 146 in front of his farm, about four miles north of Grinnell. The accident took place about 4:30 p.m.

Started to Turn
Highway Patrolman Gerald Kahler, who was investigating officer at the accident, reported the accident apparently took place when Breeden, traveling north, started to turn into his driveway. A truck following Breeden crashed into the Jeep Breeden was driving.

Patrolman Kahler reported that Breeden’s son was one of the first to arrive at the scene of the accident after hearing the crash.

Breeden’s son pulled him from under the wrecked jeep. Breeden died about 10 minutes after the accident, the patrolman reported.

Doctor Called

Dr. John Parish was called from Grinnell and arrived shortly before Breeden died. When Coroner Rex Bramer arrived Breeden was dead. The coroner pronounced him dead. Breeden suffered a crushed chest and bled internally, the coroner said.

Driver of the truck was Wilham M. McGriff, 46, of New Sharon, Roy McGriff, 64, was a passenger.

Both men were taken to Community hospital. William McGriff suffered rib injuries and Roy McGriff suffered a neck injury and other injuries. The truck rolled over several times, the McGriffs told Patrolman Kahler.

The case is still under investigation and as yet no charges have been filed, Patrolman Kahler reported. Assisting at the accident scene were Sheriff Bill Welsh and Highway Patrolman Paul Gearhart.
