Austin D. Appleby, age 74, of 1027 1/2 Broad Street, died Tuesday morning, at University hospitals, Iowa City, following hospitalization there the last 18 days.
He was the son of Andrew Dale and Emma Baustian Appleby, and was born in Grinnell on February 2, 1891. He received his education mostly in country schools and attended Brooklyn high school. While a young man he worked in his father's coal yard in Marshalltown and was employed by the Marshalltown Buggy Company as a carriage painter. He also worked on several farms near Grinnell; with the W. T. Moyle Grocery and Bakery and Barclay's Public Market for 13 years.
On December 9, 1916, he was united in marriage with Irma C. Bailey at Montezuma. To this union were born two children: George C. Appleby of Des Moines; and Mrs. J. W. (Ruth F) Pichette of Dearborn, Mich. Since 1929 Mr. Appleby worked as a car salesman in Grinnell with various Ford dealers; and was closely associated with the late Clifford Pulls for 25 years. Recently he has been associated with Van Wechel Motors.
He was a member of the Methodist church and Hermon Masonic lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Irma, at home; his son and daughter; four grandchildren; and five sisters. Mrs. Ida Logan of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs, Fred (Lucille)Foster of Des Moines, Mrs. Lillian Pugh of Grinnell, Mrs. Clara Lash of Arvada, Colo., and Mrs. Carl (Gladys) Jones of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Clinton.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Chester Custer, minister of the Methodist church officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers will be David Hamilton, Foster Pugh, Harry W. Scott, Edward W. Speth, Clarence Van Wechel, and Melvin Van Wechel. Masonic services will be conducted by F. W. Tomasek and members of Hermon Lodge #273 A. F. and A. M.
Burial will be made in Ivy Hill cemetery at Malcom. Friends my call at the Smith Funeral Home.
