MUSIC IN CHICAGO

EDWARD B. SCHEVE AT THE
FOURTH PRESBYTERIAN
CHURCH

Edward B. Scheve, organist and Director of Music at Grinnell College, Ia., gave a recital at the Fourth Presbyterian Church last Thursday which was heard by the usual small Holiday audience but which was of a value to have warranted a church full of people.

Those who were privileged to hear Mr. Scheve will long remember his authority and his artistry.

Not as a player alone did he appear but, primarily as a Composer for his "Meditation on Quotations from the Psalms" formed the most important division of the program.

This very important work--requiring something over twenty minutes in performance, is in the form of a Suite for Organ and Violin (with very liberal use of the Chimes) and the individual sections are captioned as follows--Chorale, "I will praise Thee," Prayer--"In the morning will I direct my prayer to Thee," Reverie--"How wonderful are Thy work," Elegy--"My God, why hast Thou forsaken me" and Song--"Nevertheless I am continually with Thee."

It will be seen at once that this is an ambitious as well as a very unusual program and in the writing of it Mr. Scheve has displayed all that solidity of musicianship and that technical skill which have marked his previously heard compositions.

He has done more--for, unquestionably he has been able to introduce a vast wealth of modernism in a most effective as well as beautiful way and the work therefore not only arrests immediate attention but it also holds it to the end and any audience so fortunate as to have it placed before them must needs be grateful.

It goes without saying that the Organ part of the Suite was played exceptionally well by Scheve--for to abundant musical perfection he adds fine technical equipment and the Violin line was invested with musicianship, warm tone and artistic finish by Graham Harris, a young violinist who is very much worth while.

Mr. Scheve played also "An Irish Air" (Grainger) with quaint charm, a "Paraphrase on a Russian Vesper Hymn" (Bortnyanski) with interesting differentations and Bach and Handel numbers with clarity and breadth and a "Festival Postlude (Volkmar) with brilliant techincial display and much effect.
