Sept. 6, 1899

Eber Peacock, who has been breaking on the Rock Island for some time, met with an accident last Friday that could easily have cost him his life. The train was just pulling out of Grinnell and Eber was standing on top of a box car watching the conductor who was going to board the caboose and as the train was under good headway he wanted to see if the conductor made it all right. He made the catch in good shape and Eber turned to go, but his foot caught on a nail that protruded from the car and he was whirled around and thrown from the rapidly moving train. The engineer saw him fall, a halt was made and Eber was picked up in a dazed condition. He was placed on a train and brought to Brooklyn being taken to the Skinner house where he received medical attention.-- Chronicle.
