FOUND IN RIVERThe daily papers carry the news of the death of Dr. Horace Smead, a former resident of Grinnell which occurred a few days ago.
The doctor had suffered a stroke of paralysis and took his own life, apparently in a fit of despondency. His home was Davenport.
The body was removed Monday from the government lock adjoining the Mississippi river. A bullet wound in the head indicated that Smead had first shot himself and then fallen from the walls of the lock into the water. He had been missing since last Thursday.
He was a dentist and was to be married to a Moline girl, Gladys Nicholsen, but the wedding was postponed when a month ago he sustained a stroke. Since, he has been unable to work and has been in a melancholy mood.
