DESERTER PLACED
IN JAIL FOLLOWING
SQUABBLE SUNDAY

Herbert J. Arter of Brennan, Ohio, was in the city jail today awaiting army action on his desertion from Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, last June.

According to Police Chief Glen Bell, Arter was picked up yesterday afternoon in the south part of town after he had been knocked unconscious by the barrel of a rifle wielded by Sterling Delk.

Both men were under the influence of liquor, Bell said this morning, and became engaged in an argument--which Delk won as described.

Delk was to be heard this afternoon in the justice court of John Mehlin on a charge of drunkeness and attacking Arter with the rifle.

While still in a befuddled state yesterday afternoon, Arter told the police he had run away from the camp near Rolla, Mo., five months ago. He worked for a time as a farm hand in this vicinity and for the past month had been employed at the Midwest Metal Stamping Co. at Kellogg.

INTOXICATION CHARGE
GETS DELK $25 FINE

In the justice court of John H. Mehlin on Monday afternoon, Sterling Delk was assessed a fine of $25 on a charge of intoxication and given 10 days to deliver the money.

A charge of attack with intent to do great bodily harm, growing out of his fight on Sunday with Herbert J. Arter which ended with the latter unconscious from a blow on the head with a rifle barrel, was held in abeyance.

Arter, a confessed army deserter from Fort Leonard Wood at Rolla, Mo., was called for by military police and taken to Fort Des Moines yesterday afternoon.
