DCI Murder Report to Tama County

Gerald Shanahan, director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), said last week that his agency has submitted to the Tama County attorney a full report on the investigation of the Nov. 30 slaying of Penney Sue Forrest, 18, of Grinnell.

Tama County Attorney Jeff Corzatt confirmed that he had received material from the DCI, although he added that the laboratory report is not yet complete.

Corzatt refused to comment on whether an announcement was imminent in the case, nor would he say if his office and Shanahan's would eventually make any coordinated statement.

Shanahan has deferred to Corzatt throughout the murder investigation, and he continued to do so last week.

"I think that any announcement is up to him," Shanahan said. Corzatt has contiually refused to comment on the status of the murder probe, which entered its seventh week yesterday.

Penney Forrest's partially unclad body was found Nov. 30 near Montour. The official cause of death was listed as strangulation, although other injures--including one or more stab wounds--were also present, according to informed sources.

She reportedly was last seen alive at 2 a.m. the date of her death.

Earlier, officials had expressed some optimism that a break in the case would occur soon. No such break has been made public.
