50TH ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE HELD

GILMAN (Special): Mr. and Mrs. John Osland were honored at a fiftieth anniversary open house held on Sunday, May 3, in the American Legion Hall in Gilman. The guest book was signed by 169 persons from California, Marshalltown, Laurel, Gilman, Grinnell, and Brooklyn.

John Osland came to the United States from Norway in 1914, and entered the service in Gilman in 1918. He married Elsie Broders in the Lutheran Church on May 5, 1920. The couple operated a farm in the Sheridan area until 1936, when they moved into Gilman. In 1960, they retired to their present home in Gilman.

Mr. and Mrs. Osland have two children, Mrs. Mahlon (Mildred) Dicken of Gilman and Kenneth Osland of Grinnell. Their five grandsons include Larry of Marshalltown; Jerry of San Jose, Calif.; Gary Lee, who is now serving in the U.S. Navy; and Terry and Tommy Dale at home. They also have two great-granddaughters, Lorie Lynn and Jenny Kay Osland.

Mrs. Larry Osland served punch and Mrs. Kenneth Osland and Miss Rhea Wells served coffee. Mrs. Wilbur Osland and Janice served the cake, which was baked by Mrs. Kenneth Osland.

Miss Blanche King was in charge of the guest book. Mrs. Mary Lovig and Miss Rhea Wells were seated at the gift table, and Mrs. Mahlon Dicken and Kenneth Osland greeted the guests at the door. Music was provided by Mahlon Dicken.

Kitchen helpers were Mrs. Delbert Campbell, Mrs. Carrol Ryan, and Mrs. Robert Peterson. Tom, Rhonda, and Lorie Lynn Osland carried trays.
