RUTHERFORD, JOHN--Farmer and stock-raiser, section 18, P.O. Ewart. Was born in County Down, Ireland, July 4, 1830; was there raised and educated; came to this country in 1857, and resided in Rock Island county, Illinois, for a number of years, engaged in agricultural pursuits. From Illinois he came direct to Poweshiek county, and located on section 19, Pleasant township, where he resided for five years, and then moved to his present location. Mr. Rutherford married, in 1863, Miss Sarah White, of Rock Island county, Illinois. Mrs. Rutherford is a lady of untiring industry, and through her instrumentality has assisted her husband in securing a competency. Their family consists of four children: Jennie, William, Annie and Clara. Mr. Rutherford came to this county poor in pocket, but with success imprinted on his character. As a result of his indomitable energy, economy and attention to his legitimate pursuits he is now numbered among the successful farmers. He owns 300 acres of choice land, well stocked.
