Page 876SHATTUCK, A.L.--County Superintendent. Was born in 1848 in Springford, Oxford county, Ontario, where he was educated and raised on a farm. He devoted most of his time to acquiring an education, until he attained th age of manhood. He came to Iowa in 1870 and settled in Belle Plaine, Benton county, and engaged in school teaching soon after his settlement here, and in 1872 was appointed principal of the Montour school. He there closed a couple of seasons, and in 1877 conducted the *Chilsa schools. In the spring of 1878 he was appointed commissioner to the International Exhibition at Paris, and spent that season abroad visiting nearly all European States. He returned to this county in the autumn of the same year and took up his abode in Malcom; was engaged as deputy in County Superintendent's office, and in the autumn of 1879 was elected to his present office. He is a man worthy of the confidence and esteem which he commands from the citizens of the county. He is a prominent member of the I.O.O.F. society, and also an officer of the Knights of Honor, a warm friend to all religious institutions, a zealous worker for the advancement of education and the morals of his fellows.
