Deep River Township. Pages 732-733HILLMAN, GEORGE--Section 12, P.O. Deep River. Was born in the county of Kent, England, May 28, 1823; came to America with his mother when ten years old, and, after spending one winter in Canada, the following April settled in Franklin county, New York. Here he spent the next ten years, working on the farm and attending school, a part of the time under the instruction of William A. Wheeler, now Vice-president of the United States. He moved with three brothers into Lee county, (Illinois) where he farmed for ten years. He emigrated to Iowa, bought his present place and moved to it the 21st of June, 1855. He married November 1, 1856, Mary Jane Craig, of Rock Island county, Illinois, who was born in Morgan county, Ohio, April 26, 1831. Their children are: James D. (born September 25, 1857) and Florence O. (born November 14, 1860). Mr. H. owns 80 acres of good farming land, well stocked. He was one of the early pioneers of this county, and began life with nothing but industry and perseverance for his capital.
