The Early Settlers
Grinnell (IA) Herald; Oct. 25, 1901ALLEN R. FARMER was born at Jamestown, Ohio in 1846 and came to this county with his parents in 1850, settling in Union township. In 1868 he married Emaline Fleener and they settled on the place where they now reside, he first purchasing 160 acres, and he now owns 221 acres of fine, well improved land. Their family consists of seven children, Mrs. Lizzie McFarland, Mrs. Amanda Taylor, Thomas, Anna, John, Addie and Cecil, all residents of the county.
Mr. Farmer enlisted in Co. C. 28th Iowa, in February, 1864. He went first to Davenport and then joined the regiment while they were in the Red River campaign, and remained with the regiment until July. Being taken sick he spent two months in the hospital, and was then at home for a short time on a furlough. On his return to the army, not being able for active service, he was placed on duty in the hospital and was discharged in May, 1865, and returned to his home here.
Mr. Farmer's father, Ervin Farmer, came to the county in 1850, settled here, became an extensive land owner and a permanant citizen here until 1853. He then moved to Kansas where he died in 1896. His mother died in 1858.
