Page 815SANDERS, JAMES E.--Farmer section 34, P.O. Victor. Was born June 24, 1844, in Pennsylvania, and when quite young accompanied his parents to Ohio, Jefferson county, where, after finishing his education, he engaged in farming till August 22, 1862, when he enlisted in the Fifty-second Ohio infantry and was in the battles of Perrysville, Nashville, Mufreesborough and many others. In the summer of 1864 he was assigned to the Second Illinois light artillery and was at the surrender of Atlanta and with Sherman to the sea. After receiving his discharge he returned to Ohio, where he remained a few months, then, after spending a few months in Missouri, he came to Iowa and worked on is father's farm in this county till the spring of 1871, then rented a farm in Lincoln township and worked the same till the spring of 1876, when he settled where he now lives and owns fifty acres of well-improved land. Mr. S. was married November 30, 1871, to Miss Ella C. Wherry, who was born in 1850, in Ohio. They have four children living: Esther J. (aged seven years), Joseph E., (aged five years), Celia Ann (aged three years) and an infant son. They buried an infant son (born in 1872).
