LAID TO REST
J.M. Croghan, one of Last Three Veterans, Answers Last Call.Brief mention was made in these columns last week, of the death of Joshua M. Croghan, one of the three remaining Civil war Veterans of this locality. Mr. Croghan passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sina Jouder, with whom he has made his home for many years, following an illness of many months.
Joshua M. Croghan was born in Perry county, Ohio, April 12th, 1847, and died in Griswold, Iowa, July 31st, 1928,at the advanced age of 81 years, 3 months and 19 days. In the year 1853 the family left Ohio and moved to Iowa, locating in Cedar county. Here he grew to manhood and learned the harness maker's trade, later turning his attention to farming. In the year 1864 he enlisted in Co. B, of the second Iowa infantry, and served until the close of the Civil War. He was in the famous march of Gen Sherman to the sea and was in a large amount of hard service. He was discharged at Louisville, Ky. getting his final discharge at Davenport, Iowa.
Upon his discharge he returned, remained there for three years returning to Cedar county where he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Dale on February 25, 1868. The union was blessed with eight children, two of whom died in infancy. Those who survive are James S., Philip F., Sina Pouder, Chas D., Culbert B., and Sherwood M. All of the children reside in Griswold and vicinity and have been very attentive to the father in his last days. There is also one brother, H.S. Croghan of Lewis.
In the year 1879 Mr Croghan came to Iowa and settled in Pottawattamie county. He farmed near Wheeler Grove for some time, but purchased forty acres in Wright township and as years went by he added to his holdings. After the family had grown he gave up farming and came to Griswold to make his home. It was shortly after he and Mother Croghan moved here that she was called by death and his remaining years were spent with his children.
As a young man he became a member of the Methodist church and was one of the stanchest members of the the Asbury church until he moved to Griswold and transferred his membership here. He was always active in church and Sunday school work until his health failed. He was also a member of the I.O.O. F. and retained his membership for over forty years. He was one of the last surviving members of Worthington Post No. 9 G.A.R.
For several years failing health kept him from association of his many friends, but was delighted when they called to visit with him and all will remember his cheerfulness when they called, always patient and ready to go when the end came.
The funeral services were held from the Methodist church, Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, conducted by his pastor, the Rev J.S. Ellis, and burial was made by the side of other members of the family who passed on in the beautiful cemetery at Whipple. Members of the American Legion were pallbearers.
