EARLY SETTLER GONE.

Capt. D.B. Clark was one of the pioneers of Pottawattamie County.

The funeral of the the late Capt. D. B. Clark, who died Friday night at his residence, 306 Worth street, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Broadway Methodist church, Rev. J.H. Senseney officiating. The remains will be interred in Clark's cemetery.

Capt. Clark was one of the earliest pioneers of Pottawattamie county, coming here in May, 1852, and purchasing a claim in Kane township from the Mormons before the land was put on the market for sale. He lived on this place about thirty-two years. He was born in Batavia, Genessee county N.Y., Jan. 4, 1819, where he was brought up on a farm. At 8 years of age he moved to Peoria county, Illinois, where he resided till coming to this county in 1852. Besides the old homestead he acquired some 300 acres of good land in the vicinity of Council Bluffs. In 1884 he retired from active life and moved to this city, where he resided till the time of his death.

At Ridgeway, N.Y., Oct. 4, 1840, Mr. Clark was married to Eleanor Bates. When the war broke out in 1861, Mr. Clark left his home and family and organized a company and was commissioned captain by Gov. Kirkwood. His company was called Co. H of the Fifteenth regiment of Iowa volunteers. In 1862 he was given an honorable discharge for disability rendered by heart failure.

Mr. Clark was the father of ten children, three of whom survive him. They are Ora Clark of Lewis township, Mrs. Emma J. Bartlett of Denver,Colo., and Samuel W. Clark of Bartley, Neb. All three were at the bedside of their father when he passed away. A grand-daughter, Miss Alice Clark, made her home with Mr. Clark.

Mr. Clark was a staunch republican, a member of the G.A.R. and Broadway M. E. Church, and one of the most highly respected citizens of this city. His wife preceded him to the Great Beyond just three months ago. A host of friends will mourn his loss.
