An Old Resident Passes Away.

Tuesday afternoon, November 29, 1898 the city was startled by the announcement of the death by apoplexy of John Cool. He had been seen so recently, upon our streets and was of such jovial disposition that we failed to realize that death could claim him.

He came to Avoca in 1869 and has been prominently connected with the history of our city, an active member in Masonic lodge and of that fast diminishing order, the G.A.R. His general disposition made many friends who extend sympathy to his family.

John Cool was born at Coburg, Canada, April 21, 1824, he came to the United States when he was ten years old, settling first at Buffalo, New York, moving from there to Battle Creek, and later to Elgin, Illinois.

During the war of the rebellion he enlisted in 8th Illinois Cavalry Company I, and was commissioned lieutenant.

In 1867, he married Margaret Kimball, (daughter of Dr. Fowler,) who with two sons Albert and Daniel Cool and one daughter, Mrs. M. A. How of New Hampshire, Ill., survive him. The funeral services will be at the family residence on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by the Masonic lodge.
