Richard Harvey Piles
(July 7, 1877 – April 21, 1904)

Oakland Acorn, Oakland, Iowa, Thurs., Apr 28, 1904, p.5, col.2
Obituary – Gone from among us, but not forgotten.
Our community was greatly shocked on hearing of the death of Richard Harvey Piles, one of our most estimable young men, one that had so recently gone from us in the full strength of his young manhood, with the very brightest prospect of a successful, happy and useful life before him. It is indeed sad and the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the stricken parents and the bereaved brothers and sisters in their deep sorrow and sad affliction. At the Piles ranch, 6 miles southwest of Stuart, Neb., Thursday morning, April 21, 1904, at 3:50 a.m. occurred the death of Richard Harvey Piles, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Piles, of Oakland, Iowa. Harvey was born on the Piles farm 5 miles southeast of Oakland, July 7, 1877, and at time of death was aged 26 years, 9 months and 14 days. His sickness ending in his death dates from April 4, 1904. His father and two of his sisters, Dr. Freda Clarke, of Chicago, and Miss Margaret Piles, were with him when death came. Everything was done for him that tender loving hearts and willing hands could do to alleviate suffering and to restore him to health, but all to no purpose; death, the enemy of the human race, the invisible but ever present foe, the one that will call each of us, came to him. Harvey’s entire life, except the time spent in college, he being a graduate of Valparaiso (Ind) College, graduating in the class of 1899; and the past year spent at the ranch in Nebraska, has been lived in our community. Several years ago, he, in company with other members of the family, united with the Oakland Congregational church, yielding their lives in humble submission to Him who is willing and able to save even the very utter most all who put their trust in Him. He was also a member of Botna Valley, Tent No.85, K.O.T.M., carrying in this order insurance to the amount of $1,000. He was a kind and dutiful son, a loving brother and a true friend. He was of a cheerful, sunny disposition, with fine social and business traits of character, endearing him to all those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Funeral services were held at the home, Sunday afternoon, and was in charge of Rev. J. Wallace Larkin, of the Congregational church; assisted by P. H. Green, of the Church of Christ, and was very largely attended by friends and relatives.
