McConeghey, James Alexander – 1899-1947

No inquest will be held into the death of James McConeghey, 48, killed Thursday afternoon when struck by a car on highway 6, five and one-half miles east of Oakland, while crossing the highway in front of his farm home, Coroner H. Stanley Woodring said Friday.
Mr. McConeghey, employed on the Kenneth Greg farm, suffered a crushed chest, fracture of both legs and several ribs. Chief Deputy Sheriff Fred Strother and Coroner Woodring said the driver of the car was Louis Molgard, 21, 710 First Ave., Council Bluffs. He was booked for investigation and released to appear when called. L. L. McNabb, Delta, passing truck transport driver, told officials McConeghey did not look up before crossing the highway and walked into the front of the Molgard car. McConeghey was the ninth traffic victim in Pottawattamie county.
James Alexander McConeghey, son of Mr. and Mrs. John McConeghey was born March 18, 1899 and died November 20, 1947 at Oakland, Iowa. He lived in and around Monroe until the last 18 years where he lived 2 years at Creston and 16 years at Oakland. He attended Sunday School and church at Tool’s Chapel. He was married to Sophia Gertsma, September 1919.
Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Janice at home, Mrs. Gerald Frank of Griswold and Mrs. Henry Taylor of Elliott; two sons, James, Jr., and Earl, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Viola McConeghey; a brother, Glenn McConeghey of Monroe; four sisters, Mrs. William Caldow of Phoenix, Ariz., Mrs. S. F. Kane of Monroe, Mrs. Howard Finn and Mrs. Jack Petted of Newton, also two grandchildren, Glenda and Roger Taylor of Elliott. Preceding him in death was his son, Kenneth; father, John McConeghey and sister, Mrs. H. M. Neff. Funeral services were held at Vieth’s Funeral Home, Saturday, Nov. 23, 1947 at 2:30. Burial was at Oaklawn cemetery, Oakland, Iowa.
