JOHN THOMAS HARRIS

JOHN THOMAS HARRIS, b. March 20, 1837 in Smyth county, VA -d. April 4, l9l9; married. RACHEL CAROLINE PORTER, b. July 26, l842 -d. May 6, l921; married on August 30, 1860 in Smyth co., VA. In 1866 to Mattoon, Illinois; 1873 back to Virginia; 1885 to Council Bluffs, Iowa; 1890 to Sidney. Burial at Sidney. Co. "K", 63rd Virginia Infantry. This was a Confederate unit . His pallbearers were two Confederate veterans, H.C. Byars and T.C. Hatten; and four Union veterans, Henry Spittler, Sr., Lewis Love, C.H. Polk and James Wright. CHILDREN (As far as known.): 1. Albert G., b. Smith Co., VA on April 13, l866 -d. Dec. 31, l905 in Council Bluffs. Unmarried. Paper of 1/5/l906 said he was living on the C. Rozier farm northwest of Sidney, but seven years went to Council Bluffs. Burial at Walnut Hill, Council Bluffs. 2. Sam N., b. Oct. 13, l868 at Mattoon, IL -d. 4/29/1908; married Truda Van Ness on Jan. 8, 1902. Buried at Sidney. 3. Hettie Mary, b. 1/21/1878 -d. 11/1/l955; married William Elliott, b. 11/14/1873 -d. 1/30/1954; married on 10/5/1898. Son of C.E. and E.C. (Secrist) Elliott. In 1908, 1919 was living in Sidney. 4. Nannie, b. Marion, Virginia on 11/27/1875 -d. 3/23/1926 at Hartington, Nebr.; married A.M. Thomas on Dec. 25, l897. In 1900 moved to Cedar Co., Neb.; 1908 was of Coleridge, Nebr.; 1919 was of Hartington, Nebr. 5. Edythe, married Frank Killion on 12/25/1901. Of Sutton, NE; 1908 of Edgar, Nebr.; 1919 of Ong, Nebr. 6. Josephine (?); married Sam Melton. of Council Bluffs. 7. J.T. (D?) Harris; 1908 of Oakland, Iowa. 8. Maggie Spittler. 1908, 1919 lived ten miles northeast of Council Bluffs, Iowa. 9. William died before 1919.
