Elden C. Merkert

Elden C. Merkert, 82, of Council Bluffs died March 2 at Bethany Lutheran Nursing Home.

He was born March 9, 1920, in Minden to Gus and Meta (Dau) Merkert. He lived in Minden for 52 years, moving to Council Bluffs in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was associated with his father and two brothers in the Gus Merkert & Sons Trucking business, and Merkert Grain & Feed Co. and Grain Elevator, all in Minden. He was a member of Minden United Church of Christ and served on the Minden Town Council for 23 years. He and his wife, Marjorie, developed the Valley View Heights Housing Addition and also built the Valley Manor Apartments in Minden. He was a member of the Minden American Legion Post No. 437.

Mr. Merkert was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, on July 29, 2001.

Survivors include six daughters, Angela Merkert of Oak Park, Ill., Joyce Olson and husband, Dean, and Sandra Konz and husband, Gerald, all of Minden, Donna Teachman and husband, Brad, of Kansas City, Mo., Shirley Boos and husband, Dan, of Persia, Sherry Cimburek and husband, Jay, of Grimes; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Minden United Church of Christ. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Minden United Church of Christ with the Rev. Denny Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Minden Cemetery with military rites conducted by Minden American Legion Post No. 437, followed by lunch at the church. Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be offered to Minden United Church of Christ or Bethany Lutheran Home.
