In Memory: Lottie M. Finerty

Lottie M. Finerty, 105, of Council Bluffs, died August 15 at Loess Hills Nursing Home.

She was born in Defiance and lived in Shelby County and Neola before moving to Council Bluffs 80 years ago. She graduated from Logan High School in 1913 and was the oldest living graduate from the school. She received a teaching degree from Drake University in Des Moines in 1917. She taught at Neola Public School and was a substitute teacher in Council Bluffs Schools from 1958 to 1969. She was a charter member of St. Patrick's Church Altar & Rosary Society and was the church director of music for 40 years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She had traveled with a Chautauqua group singing in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, and served as music director for the Federated Woman's Club, retiring at age 95. She was a past president of Pierce Street School PTA.

Mrs. Finerty was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh P. Finerty, a former Council Bluffs mayor, in 1956.

Survivors include six grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

A wake service was held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Beem-Belford Funeral Home, followed by visitation with the family.

Funeral was held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church with the Rev. John Bertogli, pastor, officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, followed by a lunch in St. Patrick's Church Hall.

Memorials may be offered to the church or Ameba House.
