In Memory: Eugene E. Tompkins

Funeral for Eugene E. Tompkins, 80, of Council Bluffs was held Saturday at 10 a.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Munson of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating.

Mr. Tompkins died November 28 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was federal inspector for Fruehauf Trailer Co. for more than 40 years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 737 and American Legion Post No. 373 in Ralston, Nebraska.

Mr. Tompkins and his wife, Estella Bernice, were married 58 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two daughters, Susan Woods and husband, Larry, of Mayflower, Arkansas, and Nancy Hedegaard and husband, Alan, of Underwood; three sons, Edward and wife, Bonnie, of LaVista, Nebraska, Donald "Joe" of Council Bluffs and Eugene Jr. and wife, Connie, of Honey Creek; a sister, Hazel Breckenridge, of Omaha; a brother, Henry, and wife, Patricia, of Omaha; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation with the family was held Friday evening at the funeral home. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by VFW Post No. 737.
