E. Crawford Is Dead at Home
Lumber Company Head Succombs to Illiness
E. Crawford, 78, president of the Crawford Lumber and Coal company, died at his home in the Shugart apartment house Tuesday, following a long illness.
Mr. Crawford ws born on a farm near Oxford, Wis., but when 9 years old moved with his family to a farm near Atkinson, Neb. At the age of 18, he started to work at the retail yard of the Edwards and Bradford Lumber company at Wayne, Neb., two years later being appointed manager of their yard at Sioux City.
In 1908 he accepted a position as auditor and general superintendent of the division in southwest Iowa and Nebraska for the Fullerton Lumber company which then had its headquarters in Sioux City and made his headquarters at Atlantic until 1920 when he came to Council Bluffs because of the better railroad facilities here.
In 1929, he severed his connection with the Fullerton Lumber company to conduct his own business here.
Mr. Crawford, in addition to being an authority in the lumber business throughout the entire territory, was widely noted for his civic interests. He was a lover of music and spent much of his spare time as leaders of choirs and singing groups. Until recently he had been active in the affairs of the Lumberman's Association.
He was also an active member of the Council Bluffs Rotary Club, the Elks and Masons and was and active member of the First Congregational Church.
He survived by his wife, Mrs. Parthena Crawford; one daughter, Gretchen Crawford Evans at Council Bluffs; one grandson, Edward Evans at Colorado College; one granddaughter, Elizabeth M. Evans at Northwestern University.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Cutler Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. ( Council Bluffs Nonpareil, Nov. 10, 1943)
