Fred Stude 1875-1945

This community was shocked last Friday to hear of the death that day in a Council Bluffs hospital of Fred C. Stude, 69, a prominent Pleasant township farmer.

Mr. Stude fractured his hip when he fell on the streets of Avoca on December 31. He was taken to the Mercy hospital in Council Bluffs and apparently was recovering when he suffered a heart attack last Friday, January 11th.

Fred Carl Stude, the son of Henry Stude and his wife, Margaret Young, was born June 22, 1875 in Roberts, Illinois. He came with his parents to Avoca at the age of six where they settled on the present Stude farm southwest of Avoca.

On November 29, 1895, he was married to Anna Scheffler and together they started farming near Portsmouth but after one year moved to the present farm where they lived for the past 41 years.

He is survived by his widow, two daughters: Mrs. Mabel Hardymartin of council Bluffs and Miss Ada Stude who lives at home. Other survivors are two brothers, Henry of Oakdale, California; John of Silver City; six sisters: Mrs. Lydia Nicolai of Oakland, California; Mrs. Louis Schnackie of Hancock; Miss Katherine Stude of Atlantic; Mrs. Ann Brandes of Hancock; Mrs. Margaret Short of Omaha; Mrs. Hattie Swansen of Chicago, Illinois. He is also survived by two grandsons, Fred and Bob Hardymartin. Preceding him in death were a son, Elmer, and two brothers, Chris and Edward Stude.

Funeral services were held from the First Lutheran church in Avoca Monday afternoon with the Rev. Joseph Gerlt officiating. Burial was in the silver Creek cemetery.
