Niels C. Jensen, 1857-1948, age 91
Early Avoca Resident

Last Thursday afternoon, Niels Jensen, one of the older residents of the Avoca community, passed away at the home of his son in Oakland. He had been in good health during the span of his life until about a year ago when he began to fail rather rapidly. Since that time he had not been able to move around by himself, but it was only during the last two month that he was actually confined to bed. Then last Wednesday evening about 8 pm he suffered a stroke from which he did not regain consciousness and which led to his passing about 3 pm on Thursday, December 16. He had reached the age of 91 years, 2 months, and 12 days.

Niels Christian Jensen, son of Jens Henrick Mathissen and his wife, Bergitte, nee Paulsen, was born at Toftegard, Smidstrup, Denmark. In the Lutheran church in that vicinity he was baptized and later confirmed.

On February 15, 1889, he was united in marriage with Helene Sorensen Rockholm at Vraa, Denmark. Then in 1908 together with his wife and family he emigrated from Hjorring, Denmark, to this country coming to Avoca on September 27. Here he farmed until 1937 when he and his wife moved to town and retired.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Helene; two daughters: Frieda (Mrs. Will Piittmann) and Henrietta (Mrs. Chris H. Nelson), both of Avoca; four sons, Jens and Gudmun of Avoca; Harry of Shelby and Knud of Oakland; 16 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and one sister living in Aalborg, Denmark.

Funeral services for Mr. Jensen were held from the Blust-Berthusen funeral home Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Irving N. Tange of Shelby officiating. Burial was in Graceland cemetery.
