MRS. JURGEN TAMMS 1848-1935

Marie Schaaf Tamms, daughter of John and Marie Oehlertz Schaaf, was born in Behrns, Germany, July 25, 1848, and passed away at her home in Avoca, Sunday, September 29, 1935, about 5 pm following a week’s illness which resulted in pneumonia.

Mrs. Tams received her education and religious training in the schools of her Fatherland, where on October 22, 1876, she was united in marriage to Jurgen Tamms. While in Germany four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Tamms, one of whom passed away there.

In 1882, Matz and Hans Schaaf, brothers of Mrs. Tamms, came to the United States, and the following year Matz returned to Germany and accompanied the Tamms family to this country. Mr. and Mrs. Tamms and their children: Dora, John, and Henry, located at Arthur, Illinois where they lived for five years, then came to Avoca to the farm about four and one-half miles southeast of town. Their children: Mary, Anna, and William were born after the family came to America. For about thirty-five years the family has lived in Avoca conducting what is widely known as “Tamms Hotel”.

Surviving Mrs. Tamms is her husband, Jurgen Tamms; three daughters: Dora who conducts the hotel; Mary, Mrs. E. B. Chamberlain of Omaha; Anna, Mrs. Jon Inkwersen of Avoca; and two sons: William and Henry of Avoca; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Another son, John, died about ten years ago.

Possessed of a sunny disposition and a motherly feeling for all who came under her roof, Mrs. Tamms richly enjoyed her eight-seven years of life. She enjoyed a large circle of friends, many of them like herself, born in Germany. They will miss her from their gatherings.

Funeral services were conducted by Reverend Joseph Gerlt at the hotel home at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.
Those from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kollerman, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lounzen, Miss Margaret VanLaken all of Blair, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hattie and son of Bonesteel, South Dakota, Mrs. Sadie Pierce of Stuart, Iowa, Mrs. John Kieger and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Neve of Council Bluffs, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Baston and son of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. John Ingwersen of Ogallala, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Jens Ingwersen and Mrs. Peter Ingwersen of Persia.
