WINFIELD SCOTT 1855-1933
Passing of a Pioneer

Winfield Scott was born at Iowa City, February 1, 1855, and passed away at his late home in Avoca Friday evening, February 17, 1933. Age 78 years, 16 days.

At the age of 18 he moved to Avoca by covered wagon and her in 1875 he was married to Fanny J. Petersen, daughter of Henry and Fanny Petersen. Twelve children were born to this union of who seven have preceded him in death. Mrs. Scott the first white child to be born in Knox township died ten years ago.

Winfield Scott had been engaged in farming until he moved to town about 25 years ago, since which time he has been engaged in various occupations.

This winter he had been ailing somewhat and was cared for by his daughter Bess Johnson, but about 3 weeks ago he was confined to his bed, and complications following an attack of flu brought about his death Friday evening. He is survived by his five children: Harry of Avoca; Grover of Chamberlain, Saskatchewan, Canada; Ada Russman of Defiance; Winfield Jr. of Onawa; and Bess Johnson of Avoca; also thirty-eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon, February 19th at 2 pm. Rev C.A. Nelson of the English Lutheran Church officiating. Mrs. Harvey Christensen and Miss Ednah Krohn assisted with the music. Interment was at Newton cemetery southeast of Avoca.
