MRS. WILLIAM THIES 1862-1929

Emelle Sievers was born September 27, 1862, at Davenport, Iowa, the only daughter in a family of eight children, four of whom preceded her in death. When a child, the family moved to a farm near Hickory Grove, and later to a farm near Lone Tree in Johnson, Iowa, where she grew to young woman hood. Later she came to Avoca where she made a home for her brother’s motherless children.

She was married April 30, 1890, to William Thies, two children, Clarence Roscoe and Ada Catherine, preceded their mother to the home above. She is survived by her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Robert H. True; one son, Alfred Thies; five grandchildren; three brothers: fred of Walnut, Julius of Humbolt, Kansas; and Will of Portland, Oregon; beside a large circle of more distant relatives and host of sorrowing friends.

Mrs. Thies was ever ready to do a kind deed, and that her friends appreciated her life of generosity was very evident in her long illness. She was a most patient and uncomplaining sufferer, and fully resigned to her fate. She was an unusually devoted mother and grandmother---even in her suffering her thought were always for the comfort of those near and dear to her.

When a child she was baptized in the Lutheran church, but later in life she became affiliated with the Presbyterian church, where she was a most faithful worker.

She was called to rest at noon of December 31, 1929, at the age of 67 years, 3 months, and 4 days, surrounded by her husband and children. Funeral services were held from the home Thursday afternoon—January 2, 1930 at 2 o’clock. Through strange coincident the funeral date felon the same day as that of her brother, C.F. Seivers, of Walnut, Iowa who passed away just one year ago. It was her request that his five sons: Gus, Albert, Magnus, Clarence, and Lloyd, act as pallbearers and also another nephew, Lewis Seivers, of Walnut. Rev. Walter F. Kicker of the Lutheran church of Walnut, who affiliated at her brother’s funeral, also conducted the services for Mrs. Thies.

MRS. WILLIAM THIES

Funeral services are being held this afternoon at 2 pm for Mrs. William Thies who passed away at her home Tuesday noon, December 31, aged 67 years, three months, and four days, following a lingering illness of more than two years of an incurable malady.

Amelia Sievers was born at Davenport, Iowa, September 27, 1862. In April of 1890, she was united in marriage to William Thies. To this union were born three children, two of whom preced the mother in death, Ada, at the age of seven years, and Clarence at the age of three years, and Mrs. Bertha True, who with the husband and one step-son, Alfred Thies, survive. Alfred has ever been beloved by Mrs. Thies as an only son and he knew her as a loving and devoted mother. She also leaves three brothers: Fred Sievers of Walnut, Julius Sievers of Humbolt, Kansas; and Will Sievers of Oregon.

Mr. and Mrs. Thies have been residents of this community for many years and have taken an active part in the civic and social life of the community. She will be sadly missed, not only by her best loved ones, but by the people of Avoca in general. For many weeks she has been a patient sufferer from a malignant malady, never complaining, always cheerful and exerting herself at all times to present a pleasant influence upon all who came to spend a few moments with her.

To the family, the host of friends extends sincerest sympathy.
