Wilcus A. Starkey (1866-1946)

Wilcus A. Starkey, 79, 2635 Avenue I, was found dead at the edge of cornfield near North Twenty-sixth street, between Avenue H and I, Wednesday afternoon.

Del Pruitt, 51, 2504 Avenue L, working in a nearby cornfield, noticed Starkey's body, investigated and found it was lifeless. He notified a neighbor, who summoned police.

Dr. E. C. Weir pronounced Starkey dead. He estimated the man had been dead about two hours, a victim of coronary thrombosis.

Starkey lived alone in his own house at the rear of the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Lawson, 2635 Avenue I. Born at Springfield, Ill., he formerly lived at Shelby, Neb., and Omaha, before moving to Council Bluffs about 23 years ago. Before retiring he had worked for construction companies.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Smith and Mrs. Lula Lawson of Council Bluffs, and Mrs. Violet Crandall of Rodona Beach, CAlif.; three sons, Charlie and Albert of Council Bluffs, and Sgt. Arthur L. Starkey, who indicated in a recent letter he is now enroute to Europe; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Boyer of Peoria, Ill., and Mrs Tilda Hewitt of Burbank, Calif. 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

The body is at the Woodring funeral home.

Funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Woodring;s chapel with Rev. L. H. Athey officiating. Cimmittal rites will be Sunday at the Shelby, Neb. cemetery.
