Edward Eugene "Gene" Tripp

Gene Tripp, age 90, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away June 14, 2008 at the Hospice House in Omaha, Neb.

Gene was born June 12, 1918 in Logan, Iowa; one of six children born to Roy and Florence (Ellison) Tripp.

He attended Liberty Country School. On May 22, 1941 at the age of 22, he entered the military and served for Company A. 803rd Army Aviation engineer battalion as a sergeant and heavy equipment operator. Gene was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippine Islands, and was later captured in Corregidor. The prisoners were then sent on the Bataan Death March and taken to Hell Ships, and transported to Bilibid and Cabanatuan prison camps where he worked 3 1/2 years in coal mines of Japan until liberation April 1946. Among his many awards and medals were the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, American Defense Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Philippine Defense Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre with two Bronze Stars, and the distinguished Unit Badge with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters.

Gene married Marjorie Thomas on September 14, 1946 and celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Farming was his life until he retired in 1985, but he also worked full time at Vickers of Omaha 25 years where he retired in 1980. In 1986 Gene and Marge moved from the farm to Neola, Iowa, and worked 15 years at Trippers Blue Moon Bar as a bartender and cook. Gene was a lifetime member of Neola American Legion Post #330; VFW in Logan; DAV and Eagles Club in Missouri Valley; EXPOW in Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Vern Tripp; brother, Addison Tripp; sister, Marjorie Parriott.

Gene is survived by his wife, Marjorie Tripp, of Council Bluffs; daughter, Linda Knight and husband Richard, of Omaha; sons, Gary Tripp and wife Mary, of Crescent, Iowa, Craig Tripp and wife Patty, of Avoca, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Audrey Myer, of Manning, Iowa; brother, Glenn Tripp and wife Mary of Arvada, Colo., Harold Tripp and wife Carolyn of Macedonia, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family, Monday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral service, Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at the mortuary with Rev. Dean Sparr officiating.

Interment Bethel Cemetery, Logan, Iowa, with military rites tendered by Neola American Legion Post #330. A lunch will follow at St. Patrick's Parish Hall in Neola.

Memorials to American Diabetes Foundation or Hospice House in Omaha.
