In Memory: Elva C. Tiarks

Elva Clara Tiarks, 91, of McClelland died October 18 at Oakland Manor in Oakland.

She was born October 2, 1913, in Oakland to Wilheim N. and Clara (Harder) Peters. She lived in Pottawattamie County all her life. She was a graduate of Avoca High School. She was a homemaker and teacher of China painting. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Amber Star Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Quick, Altrussa Club, Brush and Pallette Club and former Iowa State President of Iowa/World Organization of China Painters.

Mrs. Tiarks was preceded in death by her husband, Fred John Tiarks, on April 23, 1981. They were married February 6, 1935, in Avoca.

Survivors include son, Adolph "Fritz" Tiarks, and wife, Janice, of Harlan; daughters, Carol Walter of Council Bluffs, Bernadean Bichel and husband, Charles, of Carson, DeEtta Robison and husband, Robert, of Salinas, California, Jolene Caldwell and husband, Charles, of Council Bluffs; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Jacobsen of Oakland; nieces -and nephews.

Visitation with the family was held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Anthony "Tony" Paff officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the church.

Memorials may be offered to St. John's United Church of Christ, Preferred Choice Hospice or Oakland Manor.
