Kenneth D. Derby

The funeral for Kenneth D. Derby, 68, of Council Bluffs will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Chapel.

Mr. Derby died Dec. 9 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital.

He was born July 31, 1934, in Albia to Jesse and Clara (Martin) Derby. He moved to Council Bluffs in 1954. He was a 1954 graduate of Iowa School for the Deaf. He was co-owner of Derby Upholstery. He was a member of Bethlehem Deaf Lutheran Church in Omaha, currently serving as Church President; he was a life member of Iowa Association of Deaf, serving as president, 1991-97. He was a member of Council Bluffs Silent Club and the first Iowa representative to serve on the Board of National Association of Deaf, 1994-96.

Mr. Derby and his wife, Loretta L. (Loosemore), were married Sept. 14, 1954.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three daughters, Kim Mounts and husband, Gary, of Spanish Fort, Ala., Karla McGivoney and husband, Lenny, of Newman, Ga., and Kandy Harman of Council Bluffs; three sons, Ken Jr. and wife, Gayle, of Omaha, Kerry and wife, Julie, of Pacific Junction and Kevin and wife, Mary, of Knoxville; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the services and burial of ashes will be at a later date.

Memorials may be offered to Bethlehem Deaf Lutheran Church in Omaha.
