Citation for the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL
Mathew A. Tinley, colonel, Infantry, United States Army. For exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services. He displayed exceptional qualities of leadership in command of the 168th Infantry, which under his able leadership fulfilled every mission assigned to it. He was untiring in energy and devotion to his important duties, acting with sound judgement and initiative in times of emergency. His conduct was an inspiration to the men of his command, whom he led repeatedly in successful engagements. Address: 520 Third Street, Council Bluffs, Iowa. Residence at appointment: same

Tinley, Physician, Council Bluffs; born Council Bluffs, lowa, March 5, 1876; Catholic; Democrat; educated Council Bluffs High School; Medical Department, University of Nebraska, degree Doctor of Medicine; married Lucy Shaw Williams, of Norfolk, Nebraska, Oct. 8, 1902, Council Bluffs, lowa; children, Winifred, Robert E. ; first department commander American Legion of lowa; national president, Rainbow Division Society ; colonel commanding 168th Infantry, 42d Division; received Croix de Guerre from French government, Distinguished Service Medal from United States government.; served 25 years in the lowa National Guard in the same regiment in every grade; 2 yrs. in volunteer service; in 1898 served in Philippine Islands as 2nd and 1st lieutenant Company L, 51st lowa, which later became the 168th; member Elks, K. C, R. A., A. O. U. W., Moose, Rotary, R. N. of A., Degree of Honor, American Legion, Spanish War Veterans, Rainbow Division Society, Country club, City, County, State, and American Medical Societies, Railroad surgeon.
