Dr. Harvey R. Newcomb, 86, died at home June 11, 2003. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June14 at Westover Funeral Home.

Harvey was born in Bismark, North Dakota on October 6, 1916. He graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio with a B.A. in chemistry. Harvey served as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He received a Ph.D. in microbiology from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, where he met and married Melva June Derrick.

Dr. Newcomb was a long time resident of Urbandale, Iowa. He was a professor of microbiology at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. After retiring, Harvey enjoyed computers, traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Melva Derrick Newcomb; his daughter, Lee N. Holcomb and son, George D. Newcomb, both of Des Moines; and eight grandchildren, John and Alyssa Kudron, Eric and Natalie Holcomb, Linde Leahy and Alexa, Jeremy and Reese Newcomb.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Westover Funeral Home. A private burial is planned at Resthaven Cemetery.
