George, 88, passed away July 23, 2011. He was born in Des Moines, June 10, 1923 to George I. and Kathryn (Smith) Twining. After attending North High School, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines, serving during WWII. After the war, he met and married Jeanne Dawson, who served in the U.S. Navy. They made their home in Des Moines, and had a son, Danny G. Twining. George was a Des Moines firefighter until his retirement in 1978. As a family they loved being on the water, and always had a boat on the Mississippi. After retirement they navigated their houseboat all the way to Ft. Myers, FL. Upon Jeanne's retirement, they started seeing the USA by RV. They met and made many very good friends all across the country. They settled in Wauchula, FL.
George is survived by his daughter-in-law, Victoria Twining of CA; brothers, Cal (Eleanor) Twining of MN, Duane (Nancy) Twining of Johnston; sister, Karolyn (Dick) Powell of West Des Moines; nieces, nephews and cousins. George is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Danny M. Twining; son, Danny G. Twining (2002); and his wife and wonderful caregiver of 63 years. Jeanne passed away April 4, 2011.
A Celebration of Life Service for both will be September
2, 2011, 1:30 p.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines, IA, 74th & Jordan Creek Pkwy. Visitation and luncheon with family and friends will follow immediately. Anyone considering a memorial may make their donation to the Alzheimer's Association, or Iowa Firefighters Memorial Fund. George and Jeanne will be missed by all that knew and loved them.
