Wm. "Bill" Smith died on September 27, 2011 at the age of 78. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until mass time. Private committal services will take place at a later date.
Bill was a passionate advocate for peace and justice. He spent 25 years lobbying in the Iowa legislature for the cause. Before lobbying, he was a veteran of the Navy, worked at the Des Moines Register and Banker's Life. He was also an Advertising Manager with Iowa Power and Light Company and the Executive Director with Iowa Podiatric Medical Society for many years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Hoyt Smith. Bill is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Feketik) Smith; daughters, Jerri Otterness, Theresa Smith, Robbin Adels and Carol Wohlmut; two siblings, John H. "Jack" Smith and Martha Payne; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
