Everett R. Chandler, 101, passed away at Bishop Drumm Care Center on February 26. He was born March 10, 1910 in Des Moines. Everett attended St. Anthony's grade school and Lincoln High School and is a member of the Lincoln Hall of Fame. He graduated from Grand River High School in Grand River, IAin 1928. Everett married Elizabeth Vencil at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Des Moines on March 5, 1933, and they enjoyed 72 years of marriage until her death.
Everett began employment with the U.S. Post Office in Des Moines in 1939. He served in the U.S. Navy Fleet Post Office during World War II. Everett and Bessie then settled in San Francisco where he continued employment with the Post Office until his retirement, finishing as a station chief. After retirement from the post office, the couple moved to Fallbrook, CA where he operated a lime grove for several years before moving for a short time to Lake Havasu, CA. He and Bessie returned to Des Moines in 1993.
Everett was a lifetime member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, BPO Elks of the USA-West Des Moines Lodge 2752 (charter member), Lincoln High School Alumni Association-Hall of Fame, and AARP. He is also a member of St. Augustin Catholic Church and St. Anthony's Franciscans, Fourth (or Patriotic) Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Assembly 263 and the Des Moines Pioneer Club. He established scholarship foundations for St. Anthony and Lincoln High School graduates.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Everett is preceded in death by his best friend and wife, Elizabeth "Bess" (Vencil) Chandler; his parents, Vestal and Elizabeth Chandler; three brothers, Earl, Forrest and Vernon Chandler; and his sister, Martha Locke.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, at Brooks Tonini Chapel, 2135 SW 9th St., with a Rosary recited at 7. Memorials may be made to the Chandler Scholarship Fund at St. Anthony School or Lincoln High School.
