Colleen E. Bonanno, 84 of Des Moines, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2012 surrounded by family at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Des Moines with Msgr. Frank Bognanno as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery. Visitation, with family present, will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, January 27, at the church. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel has assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials can be offered to Christ the King Catholic Church in Colleen's name.
Colleen was born on October 4, 1927 in Story County, Iowa to Merle and Eunice (Mostellar) Dyer. She graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines with the Class of 1945. Colleen married Frank J. "Bamie" Bonanno on May 15, 1948 in Des Moines at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. The couple worked together in a poultry business within a grocery store in Valley Junction (West Des Moines) before opening their own business, Bamie's Pizza near the airport on the "Southside". The couple ran the family business for over 26 years. They enjoyed traveling around the country in their RV, including destinations of Bullhead City, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada, and numerous areas of Canada. Colleen enjoyed time with her family, and especially her grandchildren, playing bingo and gaming at Prairie Meadows.
Colleen is survived by her five children Frank (Theresa) Bonanno of Olathe, Kansas, Ron (Ann) Bonanno of Des Moines, Regina (Kent) Evans of Roswell, Georgia, Nanette (Dan) Seger of Sioux City, Iowa, and Michael (Kathy) Bonanno of Lakeland, Tennessee; twelve grandchildren Lori (Jimmy) Wyble, Frank Bonanno IV, Beau (Stephanie) Bonanno, Benjamin Bonanno, Brian Bonanno, Corey Bonanno, Annie (James) O'Neill, Jeana Evans, Sean Evans, Jenni Seger, Dacia Seger, and Alexis Bonanno; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; brother-in-law Lloyd Vanderpool; sister-in-law Nancy Dyer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, husband Frank "Bamie" Bonanno in May of 1993, sisters LaVaughn "Bonnie" Dyer, Ellen Vanderpool, and brother Eugene "Gene" Dyer.
