BATES, KARNS, OIKAWA, PHILLIPS

Mary Louise (Phillips) Bates finally took her last breath on March 22, 2012, after struggling with Alzheimer's for several years. Even as dementia clouded her thinking, the essence of the exceptional person she was could not be completely diminished. Mary was a beautiful soul inside and out. She lived a life of selfless service, and was never unfair or judgmental. Her faith in God was unshakable and profound. She served as a shining example to all who knew her, or were touched by her goodness.
Mary was born on August 8, 1931. She graduated from North High School in Des Moines and was married to Arnold Bates on September 11, 1949. Mary was the perfect wife, mother, mentor and friend. She took delight in all the wonders and glories of life. She cherished her children and grandchildren. She cherished life.
Left behind to honor her memory as they continue with their own earthly journeys are her children, Arnold (Kathy) Bates, Kathy (John) Karns, and Lorraine (Ken) Oikawa; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.
No local services are planned. Mary's cremains will be scattered in the serene blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico during a private family celebration.
In lieu of memorial contributions, the family asks that all those so inclined commit random acts of kindness in remembrance of Mary. Hug tightly, hug often and never let love go unexpressed.
