Upon returning to Madison he attended the UW. He then joined the Madison Fire Department on March 16, 1949, following in his dad's footsteps.
In 1951 he married his sweetheart Betty Warnish. He was recalled to the Navy for the Korean war and continued serving his country for 17 months. Upon returning to the Madison Fire Department he served as a firefighter, driver, lieutenant, captain, district chief, assistant chief and in administration.
