Sylvia Toran, 94, formerly of Des Moines, died September 7, 2012 at her home in Davenport. Graveside services will be held on September 9 at 11:30 a.m. at Des Moines Masonic Cemetery, 1550 48th St. A luncheon will be held immediately following at Temple B'nai Jeshurun.
Sylvia was born October 10, 1917, in Des Moines, daughter of Charles and Eva Caplan. After graduating from Des Moines East High School, Sylvia attended Drake University. She moved to Washington D.C. where she worked at the Pentagon during WWII and later served in the WAAC across the country. While in Washington she met William Toran whom she later married in 1944. She started her family in New York where she attended Julliard, then moved to Des Moines in 1950 and remained until her husband's death in 2005.
Survivors include her children, Carole Kucharo, Davenport, Richard (Shelly) Toran, Potomac, MD; five grandchildren and a sister Sheila (Saul) Jeck, Philadelphia, PA. Sylvia was also preceded in death by her son-in-law Donald D. Kucharo, Jr., two sisters and a brother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Mayo Foundation or Genesis VNA & Hospice.
