Lucy Albert, 84 of Des Moines, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospice-Johnston surrounded by her loving family and friends on December 6, 2010.
Lucy was born in South Des Moines, IA in Little Italy. She went to St. Anthony Catholic Church as a youngster, then went to St. Joseph Academy, and finally graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines, IA. Lucy went on to graduate from AIB with a Personal Secretary and Administrative Assistant as her academic achievement.
It wasn’t long after graduating from AIB she worked for Kelly girls and worked a few temporary jobs. Later on, Lucy landed her dream job with Farm Bureau. Leo Waggoner was her first boss who hired her on a temporary basis. She then worked full time for Farm Bureau and retired after 23 years. Lucy was a member of the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Des Moines.
Gardening was her passion. She had a beautiful flower garden she tended to everyday. Lucy was a member of the Sunset Garden Club for years and also became a Master Gardener. She met many gardener friends that shared her passion. Lucy loved to play bridge every week, and entertain her friends.
Lucy was an avid piano player ever since she was a child. She would play Christmas music during the holidays for her family and friends. She played her show tunes every day, and everyone loved to hear her play.
Lucy had the pleasure of joining a Spiritual Group for years. She was a devout Catholic and a parish member of St. Pius X Catholic Church for a number of years. She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, counted money on Sundays, and helped other parishioners.
Lucy will be greatly missed by her two children; Stevie Overton and Sheila Albert of Des Moines, IA; and two nieces: Diane LeValley and Leslie Shinn. Her parents, Mary and Frank Donato; and her sister, Margaret Shinn, preceded Lucy in death.
Lucy was blessed with many longtime friends who were very special to her. She had an infectious smile and always a twinkle in her eye.
Visitation will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church at 3663-66th St., Urbandale, IA, at 10 a.m. Monday, December 13, 2010, with a memorial Mass following at 11 a.m.
