Elsie F. Wade, 100, died Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Mercy Hospice Johnston. She was born October 15, 1921 to Harry and Goldia (Wheeldon) Freel on a farm near Runnells. Elsie was born on a Saturday so she “had to work for a living”.

Elsie worked at the Des Moines Ordinance Plant during WWII and Look Magazine. She retired from The Traveler’s Insurance Company after 36 years of service. In her retirement, she worked for the Polk County Election Board and at the Iowa State Fair in the food department.

Elsie was an active and long time member of Simpson United Methodist Church. She was a member and Past Matron of East Gate Chapter of OES and Past Grand officer of Iowa Grand Chapter of OES.

Elsie is survived by her sister, Martha McClure; sisters-in-law, Belva and Sandra Freel; 22 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; four great-great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving family and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Rex (Wilma), Ray (Wilma), Jack (Betty Jane), Bill, Earl (Marilyn), Jim (Madaline), Larry, Bob, and Dave, all Freel; sisters, Ruth (Norval) Marks, Betty (John) Deer, and Mary Ann Freel; and brother-in-law, Caryl McClure.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2021 at Simpson United Methodist Church, 2600 Capital Avenue, Des Moines with interment at Lowman Cemetery near Runnells. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
