Dean Wade Mitchell, age 94, died Monday, December 12, 2011 at Calvin Community. A memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at College Avenue Christian Church, 4440 College Ave. in Des Moines, followed by interment at Woodward Cemetery.

Dean was born May 22, 1917 in Woodward, Iowa and spent most of his life in the Des Moines area. He was a retired C.E.O. of Farm Bureau Insurance Companies. After receiving his Law Degree from Drake University in 1940 he practiced law for one year prior to entering the insurance industry. He remained a member of the American, Iowa and Polk County Bar Associations. He earned his Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1964.

Dean was Past-President of the Iowa Insurance Institute and the Federation Insurance Counsel, which named him "Man of the Year" in 1976. He has served as chairman of the National Association of Independent Insurers and was inducted into The National Insurance Hall of Fame in 1998. His community service included positions on the Board of Directors for the National Association for Retarded Citizens, United Community Services, Des Moines YMCA, New Hope Village in Carroll, Iowa and the Drake University National Alumni Association which recognized him with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award. He has been an active member of College Avenue Christian Church as Deacon, Elder and board member and chairman.

His interests and hobbies included being a commercially licensed and active pilot; a member of Quiet Birdmen; a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Waveland Park Masonic Lodge, Des Moines Consistory, Za Ga Zig Shrine and Jesters. He was an avid sportsman including fishing, hunting, trap shooting and golf. He was a member of Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

"Grandpa Dean" was very proud of his grandsons, Brent and Blake, and had always been an active part of their lives. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Billie Leaming Mitchell. He is survived by his son Scott of Carroll, IA.; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Brooke Brewer of Dallas, TX.; grandson Dr. Brent Dean Brewer, Dallas, TX.; grandson Blake Mitchell Brewer, his wife Sarah and their sons Blake Mitchell Brewer II "Mitch" and Mason Leathers Brewer of Los Angeles, CA.

Memorial contributions may be made to College Avenue Christian Church or New Hope Village in Carroll, Iowa.
