Frank Denis Dowie, Jr., "The Gentleman", 91, died peacefully at Mercy Hospice on Saturday, February 4, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 8 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Des Moines at 10:30 a.m. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the mass. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Glendale Cemetery following the mass.

Frank was born March 14, 1920 in Des Moines and served as a Major in the Army Air Corps flying B-24 bombers in the South Pacific during World War II. After his tour as a pilot, he was assigned to The Command and General Staff in New Guinea.

Upon returning to Iowa, Frank became General Manager of the prestigious Des Moines Club for 30 years and after that he became a restaurant owner in Ankeny.

Frank had a passion for boating, family activities and acquired many friendships throughout his wonderful life. A kinder man you will never meet. One of Frank's most treasured memories was hitting a 3 bagger off of Bob Feller, something not many had accomplished.

Frank will be greatly missed by Aloyse, his wife of 70 years; son, Frank Dowie III of Waterloo; daughter, Diana (Don) Reeke of Virginia; daughter, Cynthia (Mike) Elgin of West Des Moines; son, Christopher (Laurie) Dowie of Des Moines and Pam Dowie of Waterloo; brothers, Fred and Larry Dowie; sister, Denise Brunia; grandchildren, Jennifer Holland, Dee Dee Weber, Frank Dowie IV, Stephanie Arthur, John Reeke, Michael Reeke, Sara Reeke, Colby Elgin, Shannon Buttrey, Ryan Dowie and Nicholas Porter and 12 great-grandchildren.

Frank was preceded in death his parents, Frank and Lillian Dowie; brothers, Walter and Gene and granddaughter, Michelle and her husband Brad Friedly.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Mercy Hospice for their loving care of Frank and his family.

In lieu of flowers memorials contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice, 5820 Winwood Drive., Johnston, IA, 50131-1651 or to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
