Mary Manning Maher, 87, died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 3801 Grand, Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 6 at St. Augustin Catholic Church of which she was a member. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Mary was born in Kansas City, KS on May 8, 1924, the youngest of the five children of the late Francis and Maude Manning. She graduated from the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, KS and completed her graduate degree in social work at St. Louis University. She worked as a social worker for Catholic Charities in Omaha, NE from 1947 – 1950 where she met her husband, Dr. Louis Maher. They made their home together in Des Moines for the last 53 years.

Mary was a former member of the boards of Orchard Place, the Des Moines Child Guidance Center and the Visiting Nurses Association of Iowa. She was also a member of the Wakonda Club, PEO and Questers. She was an avid golfer and antique collector.

Mary was devoted to her family. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 61 years, Louis of Des Moines and four children, Anne (E.J.) Kelly of Des Moines, Thomas Maher of Des Moines, Patricia Maher (Robert Reklaitis) of Bethesda, MD and Susan Maher of San Francisco. She was affectionately known as "Dobby" to her seven grandchildren, James Kelly of Iowa City, Thomas Kelly of New York, NY, Lauren Kelly of Washington D.C., Katie Maher of Denver, CO, Cass Maher of Des Moines and Thomas and John Reklaitis of Bethesda, MD.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Augustin Foundation or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Mary's family wishes to thank the personnel of 3801 Grand and Hospice of Central Iowa for their thoughtful and professional care.
