Norman David White, 87, of Ankeny passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 4, at Ankeny United Methodist Church, with burial following at Ankeny Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, February 3, at Memorial Services of Iowa Chapel (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd.).

Norman was born February 20, 1924 to David and Nelle White near Tama. At two years of age they moved to a farm southwest of Grinnell, Iowa. He attended Hazel Dell rural school and graduated from Grinnell High School in May of 1942. In January of 1952, friends, Doris and Ernie Thorson decided Norm and Wanda Lou Milburn would make a good couple. So Doris called Wanda and convinced her she should go on a double date with them and a nice guy from Grinnell. That went alright, which resulted in more double dates. First thing you knew, they were dating by themselves and were married June 6, 1953.

Norm helped his Dad farm until 1967 when he was injured in a farming accident. He then moved his family to Ankeny and went back to school for a year and a half, graduating from AIB in Des Moines in September, 1968. He worked for Look magazine until they closed. He then went to work for Iowa State Travelers Insurance as an accounting supervisor. He was with them until they closed. He worked for Greyhound as an accountant until his retirement at age 67. Norm always has worked to support his family and that was most evident in time of crisis. He would do extra bookkeeping jobs, painting farm buildings and working at a filling station on Saturdays. He even served as the church janitor when the regular janitor was on vacation.

In his retirement, he learned how to cook, bake, did more of the gardening and helped Wanda take care of the home.

Norman is survived by his wife, Wanda Lou, children, Anita of Altoona, IA., Eric of Ankeny, IA, KayAnn (Joe) of Hampton, IA, Warren (Anita Kay) of Iowa Falls, IA, Rod (Sheila) of Forest City, IA, a grandson, Anthony White, of Algona IA, and a brother Lyle (Barbara) of Tama, IA. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Dale and Myron, and sister, Vivian Graham, parents and granddaughter, Lisa Marie.

Memorials may be made to Ankeny First United Methodist Church.
