Des MoinesFelix "Phil" Mattiussi, 90, of Des Moines passed away peacefully at home on January 28, 2012.
Felix was born on August 20, 1921 as the eldest son of six to Evaristo and Albina Mattiussi. Phil served his country in the United States Marine Corps in World War II from 1939 to 1945. Phil was known to most of his friends for his jokes, dancing the polka and bowling. He was a member of The American Legion Post 659 for over 50 years and an inductee of the Iowa Polka Music Hall of Fame. Phil retired from the City of Des Moines in 1985. He was a member of the Croatian Center and a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
Phil is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilu Mattiussi; four children, Janine Mattiussi, Phillip (Karen) Mattiussi, David (Danielle) Mattiussi and Kathy (Rick) Pinneke; four grandchildren, Meagan Mattiussi-Fouche, Scott Pinneke, Douglas McQueen and Teresa McQueen-Crawford; and two great-grandchildren, Kire Standefer and Brendan Pinneke; two sisters, Esther Harper and Florence Mackin. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Eric Pinneke; his brother, Italo (Pete) Mattiussi; and sisters, Dolores Hoover and Lou Smith. The family would like to thank Nikki, Mary and Shannon the hospice nurses, who cared for him in his final days.
The visitation for family and friends will be held January 31 at Tonini Funeral Chapel, 2135 SW 9th, Des Moines from 4 to 6 p.m. with Rosary to follow. The funeral mass will be Wednesday, February 1 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church.
