Resided in Urbandale, IAGerald Ethan Burger, 74, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2012 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. An interment service with military honors will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012.
Gerald was born on December 30, 1937 in Barton City, Michigan to Ethan and June Burger. Following graduation from Central Michigan University he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Army. He attained the rank of Colonel and retired after more than 30 years of active and reserve service. In 2004, he retired from Compressor Controls Corporation. In retirement, Gerald was a devoted grandfather, avid golfer, dedicated genealogist, and active member of the Lutheran Church of Hope, the Urbandale Lions Club, the Military Officers Association, and the SCORE business mentoring program. He also pursued his passion for world travel and enjoyed extended stays on the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jane Burger; his children, Susan Sutherland (Ed), Carlton Burger, and Ellen Buhrow (Jason); his grandchildren, Garrett Burger, Jake Burger, Lauren Sutherland , Jack Sutherland , and Hudson Buhrow; his mother, June Burger; and his sisters, Alberta Cumming (Irv) of Kalamazoo, MI and Bernita Cornish (Richard) of Muskegon, MI.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lutheran Church of Hope or the Wounded Warrior Project.
