Died in Des Moines, Friday, Jan. 18, 1907, Ira E. Draper, aged 73 years Mr. Draper was born near Indianapolis, January 4, 1834, and came with his parents to Jasper County in 1850, and settled near Vandalia. Coming here with little money, he invested what he could in lands, and at one time owned nearly eighteen hundred acres in this county. He was a member of the 14th Iowa General Assembly, was postmaster at Vandalia from 1860 to 1871 and held various township offices.
During ’70 and ’71 he published the Vandalia Visitor. In 1871 he moved from Vandalia to Prairie City, where he first engaged in merchandising, but also engaged in feeding stock, and at one time was perhaps the largest stock feeder in the county. In 1887, he engaged in banking with A. Springer and L. E. Zacharay. In 1888, Mr. Springer sold his interest to his partners, and later Mr. Draper acquired the entire business, continued it for some time and then closed it out and returned to farming.
He was married to Miss Margaret Pope who died in 1876, leaving two sons, O. P. Draper of Prairie City, and F. V. Draper of Des Moines. In 1882, he married Miss Docia Furnoy, and two daughters, twins, Maude and Mabel, were born to them, who married two brothers, Al. and C. R. Webb.
